Who We Are

Our story
The Athlete Triad is rooted in over three decades of evidence based research with new science being published yearly. However, the prevalence in the Athlete Triad is increasing, specifically in young athletes. We recognize the knowledge gap and through Triad Next Gen, we hope to decrease prevalence and increase awareness of the Athlete Triad.
Triad Next Gen strives to educate and prevent the Athlete Triad with education and peer-led discussion. The education program has been created by foundational researchers in the field, ensuring only factual evidence.

Triad Next Gen aims to educate the next generation of athletes, researchers and clinicians to prioritize the health of all athletes.
History of the Athlete Triad
1992
The Female Athlete Triad was introduced and defined by the American College of Sports medicine (ACSM). The 1992 model required the prevalence of an eating disorder, amenorrhea, and osteoporosis to be diagnosed.
The Female Athlete Triad introduced a spectrum of severity to recognize that all athletes may not exhibit the conditions simultaneously and each condition is variable.
2007
2014 Female Athlete Triad Coalition Consensus Statement on Treatment and Return to Play of the Female Athlete Triad. Introduced a risk assessment plan and return to play guidelines in effort to prevent further injury and health consequences by returning to sport too early.
2014
The Male Athlete Triad was introduced by the Female and Male Athlete Triad Coalition.
2021
2025
